This is the Worst Roger Goodell Script I’ve Ever Seen

This is old news at this point, but I had a photo stashed in my notes for the purpose of writing about it. A couple weeks back I saw Adam Schefter tweet about some email that Roger Goodell sent to all NFL employees. Here’s what it said:

note

Please, please, PLEASE take the 20 seconds to read that memo and do it with the best Roger Goodell voice you can dial up in your head. I had to read it three times before I could fully comprehend how poorly worded that was to imply Roger wrote it.

“I had an opportunity to sit down with NFL LEGEND Emmanuel Acho.” NFL Legend Baby! Cause everyone remembers Acho from his playing days in the NFL and totally not from him talking about his playing days at Texas. If this guy didn’t constantly remind me he played at Texas I swear to god I would not know he played at all. Sorry brotha. I’m sure you were terrific, I just don’t remember you.

But anyway, Roger wanted to point out that him and this 6th round draft pick legend had a constructive sit-down. Where they discussed race, kneeling for the national anthem, and Acho’s 33 assisted tackles on special teams.

“Part I of the two-part episode premiered on his YouTube channel last night…Part II DROPS tonight and we’ll pass that along after it does.” YEAH BRAH! This banger drops tonight! 🔥 Come cop it!

Wait, is this a 61 year old Roger Goodell memo or is this a Pat Mcafee tweet? ‘Cause I’m cringing. What are the odds that Roger Goodell knows what YouTube is, let alone whether he knows what a YouTube channel is? Roger probably uses Safari on his macbook and his nephew set him up with a couple bookmarks to NFL.com and CNN. This is probably what Roger’s brain thinks when he hears the term “YouTube channel.”

0.0%. That’s the percent chance that Roger Goodell sat down and tapped his thumbs into his phone to type up that message. And BTW why is it written on the iPhone notes app and contains a hyperlink if it was sent in an email?

The way I see it, there’s two people that may have wrote that message. One is a Roger Goodell intern. The other (and I pray to god it’s not) is Emmanuel Acho. I am seriously concerned that this note was a draft writeup that Acho sent over to Roger and Roger said “fuck it, copy-paste-send.”

Personally I am indifferent on Roger Goodell. It cracks me up that people get so mad about him. Getting angry at an NFL commissioner feels kinda dumb in general. Being an NFL commissioner is like being the mayor of Pittsburgh and trying to decide if you should open your businesses back up amid COVID. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. People are going to bitch no matter what you decide. Everybody complains about player-safety and then the moment a crackback block gets flagged people lose their minds. I’m guilty of it too. Do you want to see guys get their brains smashed in or not?

So I want to be clear that the purpose of this post wasn’t to criticize Roger Goodell. It was to point out the hypocrisy of advancing racial equality by having this incredible sit-down just to have someone not named Roger type up a memo. But whatever, I’m sure Mike Greenberg was on ESPN the next day with tears in his eyes congratulating Roger for his immense bravery.
