The $ix Rack Presented by Trav: Week 17

Welcome back Rack Pack to this year’s penultimate $ix Rack edition. Week 16 featured a 4-0 start followed by a heartbreaking loss, and then just a straight up good old fashioned assbeating. The difference in feelings between going to bed 4-0 Saturday night and going to bed Sunday night after the 0-2 finish was inconceivable. At some point, I have to stop doing this to myself. But for now, let’s push forward.

We’ll skip the chit-chat and get right to the action this week – we can save the banter and sob stories for next week’s final $ix Rack of the season.

WEEK 16 RECAP

1. LA Lafayette vs. UTSA UNDER 57.5 – 💰WINNER💰

Final Score: LA Lafayette 31 – UTSA 24

This game was a bit of a roller coaster as there were only 7 points scored in the first quarter. Then someone convinced UTSA’s quarterback at halftime that he was Brett Favre and for whatever reasons, he came out and played like it. So after a 21-point third quarter, I had pencilled this in as a loss. To make things even tougher, I was watching this game at my future in-laws house and I have to admit not being able to scream out swear words made this even more difficult to watch. However, our Ragin’ Cajuns D did just enough to keep this a winner.

2. GA State -3.5 (vs. Western Kentucky) – 💰WINNER💰

Final Score: GA State 39 – Western Kentucky 21

This wasn’t ever even mildly concerning. Never a doubt. Oh and I still can’t name a player from Georgia State besides Chris P. Bacon.

3. Hawaii +10.5 (vs. Houston) – 💰WINNER💰

Final Score: Hawaii 28  – Houston 14

Sure it helped Houston was short-handed, but the Rainbow Warriors finally played like they should have all season. The only question left to answer is where does Todd Graham bolt for next?

4. Liberty +7.5 (vs. Coastal Carolina) – 💰WINNER💰

Final Score: Liberty 37 – Coastal Carolina 34 (OT)

5. Colts -1.5 (vs. Steelers) – ❌LOSER❌

Final Score: Colts 24 – Steelers 28

Maybe this is what Kanye West was referencing when he says, “Welcome to heartbreak.” I still can’t believe the Steelers were able to bounce back and win this game and end my 4-game winning streak.

6. Guest Pick: Guest Pick: Titans +3.5 (vs. Packers) – ❌LOSER❌

Final Score: Titans 14 – Packers 40

I’m trying to think of something more pathetic than bringing back an old version of yourself in order to do something in the present that you banned yourself from doing in the past. I guess this would be like a recovering raging alcoholic trying to convince his AA group during a meeting that the bottle of vodka he’s drinking in the brown paper bag isn’t a big deal because he used to do it all the time but he’s got it under control now.

I joked with the Editor that I was going to put the Titans’ loss in the Guest Pick column, but I’ll swallow my pride here and put it where it belongs.

*Editor’s Note: I’m sorry but you deserved this brotha*

Holiday Parlay (+140) – 🎁💰WINNER💰🎁

  • Ragin’ Cajuns (vs. UTSA) – W
  • Georgia State (vs. Western Kentucky) – W
  • Chiefs (vs. Falcons) – W
  • Ravens (vs. Giants) – W

YEP YEP YEP! The Chiefs, crazily enough, were the ones to make us sweat this one out but everyone held up their end of the bargain.

Heisman Trophy – 🤔TBD🤔

Devonta Smith -180

What was I right about:

  • Bounce back week
  • Ragin’ Cajuns blazin’ the raisins
  • Georgia State ATS
  • Hawaii hanging with Houston
  • Hugh Freeze coming through

What was I wrong about:

  • Colts winning by a TD
  • Everything about the Titans
  • Week 1-13 Trav (and Week 16 Trav)

WEEK 17 WINNERS

1. Army +7 (vs. WVU)

My record picking for and against WVU can’t be good. This week, we’re picking against them because from what I can tell, the Mountaineers haven’t faced the triple option at all last year or this year. WVU’s offense has looked inept at times (33 points in their past 3 games combined) and I think Army (7-4 ATS) gets out to an early lead and keeps this within a TD.

2. Georgia -6.5 (vs. Cincinnati)

This comes down to J.T. Daniels for me.

Sure, I wouldn’t want the guy around my children but the man can play some football. Georgia looks like a team on a mission ready to carry some momentum into next year. And despite the Bearcats being 9-0 overall, let’s not forget they’re only 5-4 against the spread.

3. Alabama -19.5 (vs. Notre Dame)

Just a quick recap of Notre Dame’s last five NY6 Bowl games:

  • 2018 Cotton Bowl: Clemson 30, Notre Dame 3
  • 2015 Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 44, Notre Dame 28
  • 2012 BCS National Championship: Alabama 42, Notre Dame 14
  • 2006 Sugar Bowl: LSU 41, Notre Dame 14
  • 2005 Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20

That’s 191 – 79. I’ll just take my chances here with Bama. RTR.

4. UNC +7.5 (vs. Texas A&M)

The only guy on this earth that loves bowl season more than me is Mack Brown. He’s 8-2 in his last 10 bowl games AND yes, his team was favored last year (by 5.5 points) but they beat Temple in the Military Bowl by 6 TD’s. Best part is, he doesn’t even need to win this game, he just needs his boys to keep it close against a team playing in their consolation prize bowl game.

5. Ravens -12.5 (vs. Bengals)

With four straight wins, the Ravens are legit (again). I watched the Bengals knock the Ravens out of the playoffs three years ago in this same situation and if you don’t think John Harbaugh is talking to his boys about it this week, you’re nuts. This year, he gets (at least a little) payback.

6. Guest Pick: Cardinals +1 (vs. Rams)

Pitt fan (he’s back!) read my mind here. Barring Kyler Murray’s leg being broken, I think he starts this game. Rams will be without their starting quarterback, starting running back, and their best wide receiver. That leaves us with Kyler Murray vs Keanu Reeves for a potential NFC playoff spot. I’m just going to take my chances in a pick ‘em here.

Props to Pitt fan for scouring the internet looking for some juicy gossip on John Wolford (the actual name of the Rams’ starting qb) but pretty much all we got is he played quarterback for the Arizona Hotshots in the AAF last year. Oh and this tweet from 2014 when he was in college that is definitely 100% authentic so tell your friends about it.

Long Shot Moneyline of the Week:

Texans +300 (vs. Titans)

HOW DO YOU LIKE THIS ONE PERVERTS

Holiday Parlay #2:

Our first Holiday Parlay was a winner and we’re looking to make it back-to-back weeks.

  • San Jose State ML
  • Army +12
  • Georgia ML
  • Alabama ML
  • Clemson ML
  • Indiana ML
  • UNC +11.5
  • Colts ML
  • Ravens -6.5

Odds: +1041

Even though realistically there is a 10% chance this hits, I like to think it’s somewhere around 80-90%.

Heisman Reminder

Before we wrap things up, don’t forget about soon-to-be Heisman winner Devonta Smith who is still getting great value on all betting platforms. He won the AP Player of the year this week, and the winner of this has gone on to win the Heisman Trophy nine out of the past 10 years (per the Editor). The award is handed out January 5th and this is free money in your pocket so don’t miss out.

Enjoy your New Year and we will see you for one last hurrah next week!
